Do you know these facts about memes?

Millions of apps exist in the world. The number is increasing exponentially. The real challenge for the developers is to reach the audience. One may have the most fantastic app in the world, but if the users don’t know about it then it is like a white elephant! It costs so much but it is of no use.  Not everyone can afford millions of dollars to market their apps. Marketers are now integrating internet memes for app promotion in particular and promotion in general. Let me tell you a bit about internet memes.

In 1976 a British evolutionary biologist and author, Richard Dawkins in his book “The Selfish Gene” presented the idea of Memes. Analogous to a gene, a meme is an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person across cultures. He likened the spread of ideas from culture to culture similar to the genes found in living beings. As genes can move among offspring, Memes can also mutate, change, and eventually die.

Internet Memes are a subset of memes. Any idea (video, image, word, and sign) that spread across cultures through the Internet can be termed as an internet meme. The phenomenon started on the web in 1996 with the “Dancing Baby” video (although the baby and his dance moves were a bit weird). Internet memes are now known as funny, quirky, and shareable videos or images with humorous text. The images and videos are taken from famous movies, TV shows, and animated cartoons, etc.

Dancing Baby

Memes can be very effective and have a high reach but they have a short shelf life. Though some memes have shown resilience. Memes are very effective when you Integrate them with other promotional content, especially during TOFU (top of the funnel) and MOFU (middle of the funnel). Place them where these can be shared easily. You can increase traffic if you link the memes to the website, FB, or Twitter pages through a CTA. Internet memes are the most shared content on the net. The millennials and especially Generation X are the primary consumers of internet memes. They are also immediate app users.

For creating memes, you don’t need a special degree; however, graphics designing or a photography degree can help. Anyone with a good sense of humor and basic computer skills can make a viral meme. Either you can make it with graphic software or you can use any online meme creator that is abundantly available on the web.

Internet memes can be very useful to market your app if used properly. In the fast-paced Internet world, the key is to locate potential early and use it before it gets diluted. Comment if you liked this post. Or if you didn't then read the previous post.
